On Thursday 11th December, our Year 10 pupils took part in a vibrant and inspiring Welsh in the Workplace Careers Fayre, organised by Careers Wales, an event designed to broaden their understanding of the many professional pathways available to Welsh speakers across the country. Throughout the hour session, pupils engaged in six informative workshops delivered by employers who use the Welsh language yn y gweithle (workplace) every day.
The sessions encouraged pupils not only to develop their confidence in using Welsh, but also to recognise the real value of sgiliau Cymraeg in the world of work. Each workshop offered opportunities for meaningful discussion, and pupils were able to ask thoughtful questions about career routes, training options and the importance of bilingualism in modern Wales. Many began the sessions with a friendly “Bore da!” and ended with a grateful “Diolch yn fawr” to the speakers.
Representatives from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Welsh Language Department highlighted the growing demand for bilingual healthcare professionals, emphasising how essential Welsh is in providing bilingual care. Gwent Police followed with a dynamic workshop showing how Welsh supports community engagement and public service roles.
Pupils enjoyed a creative session with Big Ideas Wales, exploring how Welsh can play a role in entrepreneurship, crafts and business. Mudiad Meithrin offered valuable insight into early years education, demonstrating how bilingual settings help nurture the next generation of Welsh speakers.
The media sector was brought to life by Screen Alliance Wales, who showcased the exciting opportunities available within Welsh-language television and film production. Finally, The University of South Wales provided an engaging overview of higher education pathways, underlining how bilingual skills can open doors and give pupils a real mantais (advantage) in the future job market.
Overall, the event encouraged pupils to reflect on their own ambitions and to consider how their Welsh language skills could benefit them academically, professionally and personally. We hope the experience has inspired many to continue building their confidence in Welsh as they move forward toward their chosen futures.
It was a truly enriching day for all involved — diolch to all the employers and organisations who supported this valuable event!
