Bassaleg Year 8 Rugby team secured a cup double by defeating King Henry VIII School, Abergavenny 22-21 in the final of the Newport Schools Cup.
This was a rematch of their Dragons Regional Championship final which Bassaleg won 35-34.
In this cup final every time King Henry scored Bassaleg had to come back from behind with tries from Finley Bosanko-Sheady, Zac Little, Morgan Suller and Isaac Williams in the final seconds of the game.
But it came down to Oliver Rixon who stepped up to kick the winning the conversion. As the referee blew the final whistle the whole Bassaleg squad erupted running and jumping on top of Oliver in celebration of their dramatic cup double victory.
This was a great end to their rugby season. Due to Covid this was this year group’s first year of schoolboy rugby and they have put a lot of hard work into creating a team of players from 5 different clubs.
