Year 11 Rugby Success

By Mr Venn

On the morning of Friday the 13th of May our Year 11 rugby side travelled to play in the Newport Schools Cup Final against Newport High School.

Bassaleg started the game quickly and scored 3 tries in the first 10 minutes and any impartial spectator would not have expected such a start. The game continued in the same vein and the tries kept coming. Due to schools rules a game cannot go past 50 points, if a team scores 50 points then the game is stopped and that team subsequently wins the game. This happened in the 33rd minute when we scored a try and converted to make the game 54 nil winners to Bassaleg.

There were fantastic individual performances from Captain Tom Hancock, fullback Freddie Roach, flanker Cole Cottnam and scrum half Zac Taylor. All players played for each other and it was fantastic to watch the celebrations after the game and when they got back to school in their leavers’ assembly.
