Thirty-Nine Steps, two nights, and one memory to never forget!

By Sophia and Evie

On the evenings of Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd January 2026, Bassaleg’s Drama department put on two amazing productions of John Buchan’s play 39 Steps

Set in 1914, our pupils took on principle and ensemble roles to perform two shows to never forget. From the spy connections in Scotland's underground to framed murder, our pupils were brought together with a shared passion for drama and mystery! Our Drama department worked tirelessly from early last year to produce the show, allowing us to start 2026 off with a bang.

Incredibly, the rehearsals and preparations for the production were mainly student-led, with some of our Sixth-Formers taking on the roles of assistant directors, and as backstage, props, and lighting crew. One of the assistant directors, Emma Ibrahim, told us: “We could take our own control over scenes, unlike the bigger school musicals. The students listened to us Sixth Formers.

“I’ve always loved being a part of school productions, since I took part in Annie in 2019,” Emma said. “I’m proud to have been a part of this production.”

Due to such enthusiasm about taking part in the school production of 39 Steps, two casts were established: Night 1 and Night 2. It was double the work, double the rehearsals, and double the hard work… but it all paid off! Both performances proved to be packed and popular, with audiences laughing and becoming fully enthralled in the engaging mystery of the play. Well done to all involved!

Keep an eye out for our future school productions from the Drama and Music departments, and make sure you book your ticket for the Gym and Dance display on Thursday 12th February!
