On Wednesday 15th October, Bassaleg came together to celebrate Shwmae Day (Hello Day) and promote the use of Cymraeg across our school community. Staff and pupils embraced the challenge of starting conversations in Welsh, spreading a little more Cymraeg throughout the day and showing that every shwmae makes a difference!

There was fantastic enthusiasm from everyone, with staff rewarding pupils for their efforts to use Welsh through Tocynnau Iaith and A1s. A special da iawn goes to Amin in Year 9, who earned an amazing 19 A1s specifically for Use of Welsh! What a brilliant achievement — gwaith arbennig! 👏

Creativity was also on the agenda, as Barod groups took part in our Shwmae Doodles competition. We were delighted to see so many imaginative designs celebrating the Welsh language, with the winners receiving some spooky Halloween treats!

Llongyfarchiadau to Emma, Chester and Mabel for their winning designs. Da iawn chi! 🎃

Our Criw Cymraeg were busy spreading even more Cymraeg during break and lunchtime. Armed with the Welsh iPad and resources created in Clwb Cymraeg, they encouraged pupils to have a go at using Welsh outside the classroom, proving that there are plenty of opportunities to use the language throughout the school day.

Shwmae Day was a wonderful reminder that Welsh belongs everywhere — in our classrooms, corridors, playgrounds and conversations. Whether it’s a simple shwmae, diolch or bore da, every word helps us celebrate our language and culture.

Diolch yn fawr to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a success. Let’s keep the Cymraeg going every day — un gair ar y tro!
