Moving Up to Bassaleg - An interview with Miss Parfitt

By Isla Williams and Poppy Bond

What events have taken place in preparation for moving up?

Our transition team, Mr Roche and myself have been involved in a number of events for transition over the last three months. We have visited all of our partner primary schools to meet with year 6 pupils and staff to talk about Bassaleg, our changes to school site and school expectations. In addition to this, our partner primary schools have been to visit us on two separate occasions, once for Mr Venn’s rugby day where they all took part in a variety of rugby skills and games whilst meeting other pupils from different primary schools. Secondly, each partner primary has had a tour of our school site and been given opportunities to ask any questions.

How have the Year 6s been feeling?

Having had the opportunity to chat with our year 6 pupils lots of them are nervous but somewhat excited about moving into year 7 in September. Lots are excited to meet our staff and make new friends but are nervous about the size of our school site and getting lost.

How are we supporting the transition?

Our transition team have been incredible at supporting the transition from year 6 to year 7. They have been out to primary schools, taken year 6 pupils on tour of our school site, created videos to share on our transition website for pupils to be able to familiarise themselves with how school works. i.e. signing in and out during the school day, how and where to catch the buses. In addition to this, a small number of our transition team have stayed after school to help out with our transition picnics for our out of catchment schools.

Are you excited for next year?

I’m super excited to be Director of Wellbeing for Year 7 next year. To be able to be the first year group into Adeliad Balch will definitely go down in the history books!

Is there anything else you would like to talk about?

I would like to say a huge thank you to our transition team for their hard work over the last three months, the planning and preparation for all of our school visits, tours, videos has been incredible. As always, our pupils have represented our school community exceptionally and they should all be extremely proud of themselves

We look forward to catching up with Miss Parfitt, the transition team and new year 7s in September.
