Last Wednesday, 9th July, the Music department hosted its last event of the year, and definitely one of the most exciting.
The night kicked off with the phenomenal performance of Camelton, a parodic Hamilton medley created by 3 talented Year 8 pupils: Harry, Dylan and Rowan. Chamber Choir followed, and we had the chance to sing one last time with the Year 13s who have now parted ways with Bassaleg, each of whom were a complete asset to the department and have left a lasting legacy for years to come. The rest of the evening continued with incredible performances from the school’s Big Band, String Orchestra, Windband, Senior Choir and Junior Choir, as well as another Year 12 pupil’s very own brass band which performed during the interval.
Each performance was fantastic, but a special shoutout from myself goes to the Windband and String Orchestra for their joint performance of (Risk) Everything For a Dream, where the bands came together and the Year 13 Leavers had a solo each to start the piece off.
To end the night, the choirs came together to create a mass choir which performed a version of “When The Saints Go Marching In” by John Rutter, involving almost every pupil included in the evening. This was a really pleasant end to the evening, and it truly was fantastic overall.
A special thanks goes out to everyone involved in the evening; Mr Keates and Mrs Davies for once again organising such an exceptional event, the Gwent Music staff: Mr Stone, Mr Bentley, Mr Turner, Mrs Hornsby and Mrs Gillford-Berry for their remarkable playing and conducting, and a special thank you to all of the amazing pupils involved in making the evening as wonderful as it was, and turning it into an evening to remember.
A quote from a year 12 pupil, Ffion: "Music is my heart - being involved in the department is something I have always loved and I will really miss the Year 13's going forward. The Summer Concert is always a favourite, I am excited to see where next year will take us".
