Headteacher's welcome

A warm welcome to Bassaleg School. I take enormous pride in leading such a special community; one which places our mantra of ‘Believing and Belonging’ at the heart of everything we do.

With innovative curriculum design plans in place and high quality teaching, learning and wellbeing at the very heart of our ethos, our team at Bassaleg is wholly committed to ensuring that every child aspires to be the very best version of themselves.

We strive to enable all of our learners to feel challenged and also supported and cared for, to be ambitious, to be positive in their outlook and curious about the world in which they live, to be respectful and honest and above all else, happy and true to themselves. Our mission statement: ‘Believing and Belonging’ very much represents the aspiration we instil within our community in everything we do, alongside the expectation for everyone to always be kind; ‘to look after ourselves and look after each other.’

Such values are symbolised within our very proud logo of the stag; with its head looking to the right, this is synonymous with our school being a progressive one always looking out and ahead to seek new experiences for our learners. The definition on the stag’s neck has subtly been designed to show a page turning and that our school has been rich in ‘transformation’ in recent times. The stag’s neck also creates the shape of a shield which symbolises our strength and resilience as a school community and is also an important nod to our heritage and tradition as a school.

Our proud new branding

As a large mixed comprehensive inclusive of almost 1800 pupils, we are very proud of pupils’ achievement in the widest sense and of the supportive and dynamic learning community we have created for pupils and staff, who flourish within an environment where reflective practice and ambitious professional learning are fundamental to our ethos.

Our culture is driven by the promotion of effective oracy; enabling our pupils, parents/carers, staff and governors to voice ideas and opinions and to collaborate regularly. Our ‘Listening to Young People’ agenda is exceptional and fully represents the priority we place on promoting equality, diversity and respect within and beyond our school community.

We pride ourselves on the regular and effective collaboration in which we engage across the region and beyond, always seeking further opportunities to enable our staff and pupils to flourish and grow.

Finally, I’m delighted to share that 21st century schools’ money recently awarded to Bassaleg School will also result in significant improvement to our current facilities across a very large site; thus ensuring that our environment and resources fully reflect the innovation and creativity within our curriculum and dynamic pedagogical approaches; it is a hugely exciting time for Bassaleg School and our very proud wider community.
